Frequently Asked Questions about Acupuncture

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is one treatment modality of Oriental Medicine (OM). Once an OM practitioner completes an initial intake and formulates a treatment diagnosis acupuncture points (acupoints) are then selected for treatment. Acupoint selection is done on an individual basis and can change from one treatment to the next. By needling acupoints, an acupuncturist is communicating with the energy of the patient and is therefore stimulating natural balance and healing.

 Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture is the insertion of slender sterile needles into acupuncture points (acupoints) on the body. The needles are solid and approximately the width of a human hair as opposed to hypodermic needles which are much larger and hollow. Therefore, acupuncture needles do not elicit the pain associated with hypodermic needles. Needle insertions during acupuncture treatment go unnoticed by some while others describe sensations of tingling, numbness, heaviness, dull ache, warmth, or traveling. Once inserted the needles are left into place for up to 45 minutes. Most people feel very comfortable and relaxed during treatment and may even fall asleep!

 Is acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture is very safe when conducted by a licensed practitioner. Only pre-sterilized disposable stainless steel acupuncture needles are used. Needles are disposed of after one use.

Know the qualifications and educational background of your acupuncturist. Make sure they hold a graduate degree in acupuncture from an accredited college, and that they are state licensed in the state where you will be receiving treatment. Many states now require that practitioners complete national certification in acupuncture with the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM).

How Many Treatments will it take to treat my condition?

The number and frequency of treatments needed depends upon the nature, intensity, and duration of your complaint. Generally, acute conditions may only need a couple of treatments where-as more chronic conditions may be resolved with a course of 6-12 treatments. Conditions that are particularly severe or degenerative may need several treatments before improvement and may require many treatments over time. Initially, treatments are scheduled as often as three times a week or as little as twice a month. The frequency of treatments needed decreases as symptoms improve.

Your acupuncturist may suggest diet, exercise, and other lifestyle modifications that may decrease the number of treatments needed for improvement.

What should I do before, during, and after a treatment?

It is advised not to receive acupuncture on an empty stomach, immediately after consuming a large meal, if very fatigued, or emotionally upset. Wear loose, comfortable clothing. During treatment it's best to relax and feel free to ask your practitioner any questions you may have. It is recommended to avoid physical activity directly after receiving a treatment.
